History

The Socialist Party of Serbia was founded 16-18 July 1990. The Statute and the program basis, which legitimized SPS as a modern left-oriented party were adopted at the Founding Congress At the Founding Congress Slobodan Milosevic was elected the President, as well as the Main Board of the Party, Statutory and Supevisory Committee.

The highest body of the Socialist Party of Serbia is the Congress, which normally takes place every four years.

Since its foundation seven Congresses have been  held – The seconod between 23 -24 October 1992, the third between 2-3 March 1996, the fourth on 17  February 2000 , the fifth special on 25 November 2000, the sixth on 18 January 2003, the seventh on 3  December 2006.

The Socialist Party of Serbia is profiled as a modern, left wing constituent party, whose program fundamentals are social justice and democratic socialism.

SPS is committed to market economy and social justice, privatization of industry, democratization of the society and the integration of our country in the European Union.

SPS is for a unified, stable and democratic Serbia that manages to express and realize fundamental national and state interests, provide freedom to all citizens, guarantee human and minority rights to all national communities living in Serbia in accordance with the highest European standards.

SPS wants to create a modern, fair and democratic society, with open perspectives for a new and better social system:

- democratic state as the guarantor of peace and development of human and civil rights and freedoms – political, socio-economic and cultural;
- society of social justice that will emerge from poverty, ensure a balanced financial position and the possibility for development and a better life of each individual;

-society that guarantees people the right to work, health care, education and social protection to everyone in need;

-society where everyone will be able to make their own living and where social security is stable

-society  where  citizens have equal rights to make and accomplish their decisions- where equal standards of living for everyone , regardless of their social and material status and origin , is guaranteed;

-the state that develops and nurtures good neighbourly relations on the principles of equality, non-interference, mutual respect and territorial integrity without changing its internationally recognized borders;

-the state that will be the equal participant of regional and European integrations  while  respecting its own  national and state interests and preserving its identity;

-The battle for Kosovo and Metohija within Serbian borders remains priority national and political issue. SPS is for the peaceful political solution in the form of autonomy, and it is against solutions that are contrary to the UN SC Resolution 1244 and those that put the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Serbia in danger.

SPS is against autonomist and separatist movements that want to turn Vojvodina into a country. SPS is for the unified territory of Serbia with two autonomous provinces and their full affirmation, and  is against yet another division and federalisation of Serbia.

The Socialist Party of Serbia today has more than 200 thousand members, organisations in autonomous provinces of Vojvodina and Kosovo and Metohija, municipal organisations in all municipalities on the territory of the Republic and around 5000 local organisations in almost every local community. SPS also has its organisations in a number of European countries that are acting in accordance with legislation of the countries they were found in.

Members of all national minorities are part of the SPS.
